I’ll have more on this later, but I wanted to get up a first reaction to the news the Supreme Court (barely) upheld birthright citizenship, a fact of American life for the last 160 years. What I hope everyone takes from today are three important lessons.
First, because this was essentially a 5-4 decision, the right will absolutely not stop here. They’re going to organize around this issue and try again. Second, it’s very clear the Supreme Court - and virtually any major institution with majority right-leaning influence - wants the U.S. to become an ethnostate and will accept any proposed legal changes on whatever ad hoc grounds required to make that possible. Whether those alterations are legal, ethical or even sane is immaterial to their end goal. Third, any Democrat running for national office who doesn’t explicitly promise to pack the court reveals they are manifestly not built for the urgency of the moment and should not be supported.
The U.S. - and what has powered it to greatness - is genuinely under attack, one that will not stop here. In terms of the country remaining as we have come to understand it, this moment is existential. More on this to come.
